FAQ.
Do I need to be familiar with Yume Nikki/.flow to play this game? Will there be spoilers?
No and no! You do not need to be familiar with those games to play at Nexilitas. An idea of their atmospheres and imagery may enhance your experience, though! Thus, here is a handy-dandy list of helpful links and videos that demonstrate what the games are all about.
Yume Nikki wiki page
.flow wiki page, with download links
.flow wiki with maps, characters, and events
Yume Nikki — Monoko
Yume Nikki — Mars
.flow — Plexus
.flow — The Rainbow Maze
To elaborate on the latter question, there will not be any spoilers for the games in Nexilitas. Sabitsuki will be featured as an NPC, but details in regards to .flow’s events won’t play a role in that.
Who can I play?
You can play any character from any fandom and medium, be it anime/manga, live action movies/TV shows, comics, cartoons, or anything else you can think of. However, at the current moment, we are not accepting original characters. They will be able to be apped in the near future, however.
Can I app Madotsuki/Urotsuki/etc.?
You bet! Any protagonist of a Yume Nikki fangame is appable except for Sabitsuki, as she will be an NPC.
How many characters can I play at one time?
You may play up to five (5) characters at one time, and you may app up to two (2) each round. The character limit is flexible and goes on a case-by-case basis, so please talk to the mods if you want to pick up any more than five characters.
Is there any overarching plot?
For now? No. Your character’s job at the moment is to explore Nexilitas, to discover its mysteries, and form relationships and possible alliances with other characters. A massive, long-term plot is planned for a bit later on in the game.
How will characters interact and communicate with one another?
Characters will interact with each other through action and video, audio, and text messages. The former is a bit more difficult, as Nexilitas is vast and forms around each individual’s psyche. There are common areas in which characters can meet each other, though! Video, audio, and text messages will be made via the communication devices given to each character.
What’s this about communication devices?
When your character initially arrives in the Nexus, they will find a wireless earpiece already fitted into their ear. It comes equipped with a microphone, and pressing a small button on the side—at the junction of the earpiece and the microphone—will bring up a virtual keyboard and touchpad as well as a screen displaying all recent network posts and messages. The USB drive is primarily for accessing network posts on the desktop. That being said, they will also receive a desktop (located in their room) that performs largely the same functions and serves as the gateway into Nexilitas. The level of security within the interpersonal network is average; it will indeed take some skill to construct a completely unhackable post, but it won’t necessarily be easy for characters to hack into the network either.
What is the world like? How do the locations work?
Nexilitas is a mysterious network that feeds off of your psyche as you explore it. Though there are static locations in the network, there are also locations that are exclusive to your character, and you are free to create new areas under one condition: the new areas must correspond to or reflect a character’s fears, hatreds, and disgusts. Please note that other characters will not be able to access these locations unless they are directly connected to a negative aspect of your character’s psyche. For example, if your character likes Person X, they will not be able to access any of the character’s areas. However, if your character hates Person X, Person X may be able to access certain areas that were borne of the character’s hatred for them. In addition, other people can see your character’s areas if your character chooses to record video messages while exploring it.
So, long story short, much of the worldbuilding is in your hands! It’s not a required aspect of the game, as there are many static areas for your character to explore and "have fun" (take that as you will) with, but it opens up interesting possibilities for your character in terms of development.
New areas that are accessible to everyone will be made available as the game progresses. The world of Nexilitas is constantly growing and morphing—for better or for worse.
So, where is my character going to stay?
Each character gets their own room that they are able to go to after signing off the network. It’s quite small; it comes with a single bed, a small table, a refrigerator that is always mysteriously stocked with food, a television that doesn’t seem to get any channels, and a desk where their computer is located. A lavatory with a sink, shower, and toilet is adjacent to the room and can be accessed through the door opposite the bed. The room (counting the lavatory) is inescapable, as the door to the outside world is locked from the outside and impossible to destroy or otherwise open. As well, there is a sliding door in the room that leads to the balcony outside if your character happens to need some light or fresh air. But they shouldn’t get any funny ideas about escaping, for when they look down, they’ll find that they can’t see the ground…
Can characters bring other characters back to their room?
Characters may bring only one person back to their room at a time. The way to do this ICly is to select the “Link Together” option on the communication device’s menu, type in the name of the person they wish to bring back, and select the “Sign Off” option. The other party will have to approve this process, so it is impossible to forcibly bring characters back to the person in question’s room. When the other party decides to return to their room, both characters must sign on to the network, and the character who initiated the link must select the "Cancel Link" option on their communication device.
Is there any way for characters to leave?
The only way for characters to permanently escape the web of the network is to collect twenty-five (25) effects and three (3) “empty boxes.” The way to accomplish this is to merely explore the world of Nexilitas and interact with the bizarre beings that inhabit it. The effects’ locations differ for each character, so it is impossible to collaborate with others on finding them. When your character has collected all twenty-eight of the necessary items, they must drop them (manifesting as boxes) all in the Nexus. From there, your character will be surrounded by a blinding light and returned home.
Now, the case of the empty boxes is a bit different than that of the effects. To obtain the empty boxes, your character must go through an emotionally or mentally significant event within the game that has a lasting, perhaps even permanent effect on them. You must fill out a special application to obtain an empty box.
You can choose to have your character find effects on or off camera, so to speak. However, your character can only find up to seven effects each OOC month.
What’s the deal with non-human characters? (Trolls, animals, etc?)
All non-human characters remain non-human, and they retain their appearances completely as well. Nexilitas is a network filled to the brim with strange creatures—certainly, there’s no reason for other creatures to become human for the sake of the network. If you do want to play your non-human character as human or humanoid, however, that is perfectly fine as well.
What about powers? Are those still intact?
No. When characters arrive at Nexilitas, they have been stripped of all their powers. However! They can recover some powers in the form of finding effects. There are three “wild card” effects available to do this with. Please use your discretion when obtaining and exercising powers, though, and keep the godmodding rule in mind. If you aren’t sure of something, please run it by the mods first!
What are the deets on injuries, illnesses, and death?
We’re so glad you asked! Injury is nigh unavoidable in Nexilitas, and it can come in a variety of forms. You can be harmed by one of the many hostile creatures in the network, attacked by a Kaibutsu, or attacked by another character. As the game goes on, new dangers will constantly be introduced. Illnesses are a bit rarer, but still possible. Death is a major possibility as well, and if your character has one too many run-ins with a Kaibutsu or other hostile thing, they may very well find themselves dead.
But! Dying on the network does not necessarily imply that the character is dead on the whole. It may take one time, it may take a dozen, but the point is that dying on the network does not coincide with dying in real life. For that matter, it is impossible to die outside of the network unless your character purposely starves themselves. If they try to jump off the balcony, they will find that they will simply land on the balcony again, unharmed.
When your character does die both on the network and in real life, death is permanent. They cannot be revived.
What happens to my character when they’re dropped?
It’s quite simple, really; they vanish. The characters still in the game will retain their memories of the person, but they will be assumed to have been lost to the vastness of Nexilitas, to have succumbed to the darkness and the horror that resides within it. Their room will disappear, along with all their belongings.
Can I pick up a character again after I dropped them?
You certainly can! However, this is assuming that two conditions are satisfied:
1) That character is not played by anyone else, nor are they currently reserved
2) At least one month has passed since you dropped them
Please note that you cannot pick a character up again unless apps are open at the time.
You didn’t answer my question!
